In these troubled and divisive times, how can we engage in constructive dialogue and find common ground, despite our differences? The insightful quote from Dr. Caroline Leaf provides a valuable perspective on navigating disagreements in a more productive manner.

5.6.png

“Argue well. It is incredibly important to remember that,
in any argument, it's not you against the other person.
Rather, it's you and the other person against the issue.
Separate the human from the problem.”

Welcome to the Quote of the Week; Serving the psychosocial needs of its members since 1984! Have you ever felt a disconnect between who you are and who the world seems to expect you to be? The poet, e. e. cummings, known for his unconventional style, captures this struggle perfectly with this week's quote.

This week’s iconic quote/question from Mad magazine's Alfred E. Neuman seems carefree on the surface. However, one could interpret a deeper philosophical meaning. (Embrace life without unnecessary anxiety or Life is too short to worry excessively). But in the end, sometimes the simplest phrases hold profound truths.

You know the question, is the glass half-full or half empty? For years people have argued about the fullness or emptiness of the thing.  Today's quote offers a different perspective of that age old question...

In January, while having fun watching a football game at a local bar with my old friends from high school, I was struck by the wisdom of a James Joyce quote displayed behind the bar. It was a reminder of the value of long-standing friendships. So, who are the friends who have been in your corner all these years?

25 March 2024

Welcome to the Quote of the Week. Life is often compared to the ebb and flow of the ocean's waves. In the final episode of the the TV series "The Good Place," the character Chidi Anagonye offers a thoughtful analogy that likens an individual's existence to a single wave.  Perhaps, like mine did with Chidi's thought-provoking metaphor, your perspective will undergo a slight shift.

3.25.png

"Picture a wave in the ocean. You can see it, measure it - its height,
the way the sunlight refracts as it passes through - and it's there,
you can see it, and you know what it is, it's a wave. And then it crashes
on the shore and it's gone.  But the water is still there. The wave was
just a different way for the water to be, for a little while."

I've been there all too often and perhaps you have as well - stuck in a loop, spiraling through the same self-defeating behaviors and tripping into familiar ruts that we can't seem to escape. But as Portia Nelson shares in her quote this week, drawn from her autobiography, the path to change may be simpler than we realize.  (I need to get to Chapter 5 quicker!)

3.18.png

My
Autobiography in Five Short Chapters

Chapter 1
I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk
I fall in.
I am lost ... I am helpless.
It isn't my fault.
It takes me forever to find a way out.

Chapter 2
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don't see it.
I fall in again.
I can't believe I am in the same place
but, it isn't my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.

Chapter 3
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there.
I still fall in ... it's a habit.
My eyes are open
I know where I am.
It is my fault.
I get out immediately.

Chapter 4
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.

Chapter 5
I walk down another street.

Portia Nelson

How often do we stress over things that don’t really matter in the long run? Here’s a wise reminder from  C. S. Lewis’s book The Four Loves, where he challenges us to think about what is truly valuable and lasting.

"All that is not eternal is eternally out of date.
Everything that is not eternal is worthless in eternity."

The future holds many unknowns. How will you respond to the changes and challenges that await you? Will you procrastinate and make excuses (like I mostly do), or take decisive action? The philosopher William James insists we do the latter with his directive in this week's quote.

“To change one’s life;
Start immediately.
Do it flamboyantly.
No exceptions.”

William James
