Welcome to the Quote of the Week. Life is often compared to the ebb and flow of the ocean's waves. In the final episode of the the TV series "The Good Place," the character Chidi Anagonye offers a thoughtful analogy that likens an individual's existence to a single wave.  Perhaps, like mine did with Chidi's thought-provoking metaphor, your perspective will undergo a slight shift.

3.25.png

"Picture a wave in the ocean. You can see it, measure it - its height,
the way the sunlight refracts as it passes through - and it's there,
you can see it, and you know what it is, it's a wave. And then it crashes
on the shore and it's gone.  But the water is still there. The wave was
just a different way for the water to be, for a little while."

I've been there all too often and perhaps you have as well - stuck in a loop, spiraling through the same self-defeating behaviors and tripping into familiar ruts that we can't seem to escape. But as Portia Nelson shares in her quote this week, drawn from her autobiography, the path to change may be simpler than we realize.  (I need to get to Chapter 5 quicker!)

My
Autobiography in Five Short Chapters

Chapter 1
I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk
I fall in.
I am lost ... I am helpless.
It isn't my fault.
It takes me forever to find a way out.

Chapter 2
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don't see it.
I fall in again.
I can't believe I am in the same place
but, it isn't my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.

Chapter 3
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there.
I still fall in ... it's a habit.
My eyes are open
I know where I am.
It is my fault.
I get out immediately.

Chapter 4
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.

Chapter 5
I walk down another street.

Portia Nelson

How often do we stress over things that don’t really matter in the long run? Here’s a wise reminder from  C. S. Lewis’s book The Four Loves, where he challenges us to think about what is truly valuable and lasting.

Everything that is not eternal is worthless in eternity."

The future holds many unknowns. How will you respond to the changes and challenges that await you? Will you procrastinate and make excuses (like I mostly do), or take decisive action? The philosopher William James insists we do the latter with his directive in this week's quote.

“To change one’s life;
Start immediately.
Do it flamboyantly.
No exceptions.”

William James

Welcome to the Quote of the Week! Each week, we share an inspiring or thought-provoking quote to uplift your spirit and encourage positive thinking. In honor of President's day, this week's quote from America's 30th president suggests that real honor lies not in what we get, but what we give.

Have you ever pondered about life's meaning and purpose? In the words of the Spanish painter and sculptor Pablo Picasso, the essence of existence lies in discovering one's gift,  and that the best way to live is to share it with others.

What brings true fulfillment - the end goal or the journey? Robert Updegraff's quote suggests that genuine happiness arises from living purposefully in the present rather than solely focusing on future ambitions. Do you agree?

What gives meaning to our lives? This week's quote by the poet Rilke suggests it is the concept of impermanence. He believed that nothing lasts forever, and this makes life precious and worth living. Do you agree with his view?

How do you react when things don’t go your way? Do you, like me, get frustrated and angry, or do you accept the situation and look for the silver lining? In his book Think Like A Monk, Jay Shetty offers a different perspective on how to deal with challenges and setbacks.

1.22.png

“Don’t judge the moment.
As soon as you label something as bad, your mind starts to believe it.
Instead, be grateful for setbacks. Allow the journey of life to progress at its own pace
and in its own roundabout way. The universe may have other plans in store for you.”

What could you gain by turning inward to know yourself more deeply?
This week we explore the path to true wisdom and power as pondered by ancient philosophers, Lao Tzu and Aristotle. They both emphasize self-understanding as the key to personal growth, guiding wise choices for fulfillment and positive impact.
