Do your New Year's Resolutions "go in one year and out the other"?

Back in January of 2008, The Quote of the Week featured a new way of of making New Year's Resolutions (thanks to Kristine Kane's blog). She suggests that instead of making resolutions, we would pick a word or words that would guide us throughout the year. It would remind us of living our lives at the TO BE level instead of the To Do or To have level.

Last year my word was Openness (not sure how well I did but...) and this year I am choosing the Latin phrase, Memento Mori which translated means "Remember your mortality". Hopefully this phrase will be my reminder that my life comes with an expiration date (usually unexpectedly) and to live accordingly.

Welcome to the Quote of the Week's annual "Old Year Reflection Questions." For the past few years, I have come up with a list of questions that will hopefully help you (and me) reflect on this year so you may clear the path for the brand new year ahead of us and to move forward on a more positive pathway to manifest what's next! Here are the Questions...

Some Old Year Reflection Questions to think about...

1. Encapsulate the year 2010 in one word. Explain why you’re choosing that word. Now, imagine it’s one year from today, what would you like the word to be that captures 2011 for you?
2. If there is a symbol that represents 2010 that would capture its essence, what would it be?
3. If you could give yourself a name that symbolizes you in 2010 what name would you give yourself?
4. Name the people who made a difference in your life. Whom do you appreciate and why?
5. What gifts have you received this year? (This could be tangible like your income, a favor or emotional support.)
6. What gifts have you given others this year? (tangible or not)
7. Imagine you will completely lose your memory of 2010 in five minutes. Set an alarm for five minutes and capture the things you most want to remember about 2010.
8. How did your relationships grow, change or end? What did you learn?
9. What journeys have you taken? (inner and outer experiences i.e. a new baby, a vacation, a new job)
10. What goals did you achieve and what do you need to celebrate?
11. For Review-What and who did you grieve this year and where are you in the process?
12. What was the wisest decision you made this year, and how did it play out?
13. Where did you find joy?
14. What do you want to try next year? Is there something you wanted to try in 2010? What happened when you did / didn’t go for it?
15. What would be the sound track/song that represents your life in 2010?
16. Pick one moment during which you felt most alive this year. Describe it in vivid detail (texture, smells, voices, noises, colors).
17. What (or whom) did you let go of this year? Why? What are 5 things your life doesn’t need in 2011? How will you go about eliminating them? How will getting rid of these 11 things change your life?
18. What should you have done this year but didn’t because you were too scared, worried, unsure, busy or otherwise deterred from doing? (Will you do it in 2011?)
19. What was the best thing you learned about yourself this past year? And how will you apply that lesson going forward?
