"Why can't people just see the best in things? It gets you so much further in life. It's always negative this and negative that. That's all you see and hear."

That was the Quote of the Week for May 27 and was said by a remarkable young man named John Challis. Included with the quote was a link to his story and a number of you emailed back saying how moved you were by his story (

Unfortunately, I just learned of John's passing and here are a couple of links that tells of his life and courage as inspired people around the country with positive messages in his final days.

A Recycled Quote of the Week Classic and Challenge...

"Give honest and sincere appreciation."

Dale Carnegie's' 2nd Human Relation Principle

In the U.S., this week marks our Thanksgiving holiday. In spite of all the pre-holiday sales, anticipation of the arrival of Santa, traveling, eating Turkey, drinking and watching football, the center of this holiday is thankfulness. Or is it?

I don't think Dale Carnegie thought that one should wait for Thanksgiving to "Give honest and sincere appreciation", but that it should be done on a daily/weekly basis. If you have gotten away from this practice (like I have), this Thanksgiving could be the perfect time to start up again!

My challenge for myself is to not only think about those who have helped me, caught me, taught me, believed in me, re framed things for me, showed me, etc. but to take the time and "Give honest and sincere appreciation!" Anybody care to join me in this challenge?

"Gratitude encourages intuition and abundance. This week and every day be thankful for who and what is in your life — instead of complaining about what you don't have. Appreciate all the abundance and goodness that's around you, whether big or small. Be thankful for your health, children, sunny days, your garden, family, best friends, or even the person who let you jump ahead in line at the bank. There Is More In Valladolid, Spain, Christopher Columbus died in 1506. There stands a onument commemorating the great discoverer. An interesting feature of the memorial is a statue of a lion destroying one of the Latin words that had been part of Spain's motto for centuries. Before Columbus made his voyages, the Spaniards thought they had reached the outer limits of the earth. Thus, their motto was "Ne Plus Ultra," which means, "No more beyond." The word being torn away by the lion was "Ne" or "No," making it read "Plus Ultra." Columbus had proved that there was indeed "more beyond."

__________

Deep within each one of us there is an inner longing to live a life of greatness and contribution – to really matter, to really make a difference. We may doubt ourselves and our ability to do so, but I want you to know of my deep conviction that you can live such a life. You have the potential within you. We all do. It is the birthright of the human family. All of us can consciously decide to leave behind a life of mediocrity and to live a life of greatness, at home, at work and in the community. No matter what our circumstances may be, such a decision can be made by every one of us, whether that greatness manifests by:

- choosing to have a magnificent spirit in facing an incurable disease,
- making a difference in the life of a child, giving that child a sense of worth and potential,
- becoming a change-catalyst inside an organization, or
- becoming an initiator of a great cause in society.

We all have the power to decide to live a great life, or even simpler, to have not only a good day but a great day. No matter how long we've walked life's pathway to mediocrity, we can always choose to switch paths. Always. It's never too late. We can find our voice.

__________

Love After Love

The time will come when,
with elation, you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror,
and each will smile at the other's welcome,

and say, sit here. Eat.
You will love again the stranger who was yourself.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved you all your life,
whom you ignored for another,
who knows you by heart.

Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,
the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror.
Sit. Feast on your life.

A Quote Revisited; A Man Remembered

It has come to my attention that Carnegie Mellon professor Randy Pausch, 47, has lost his battle with pancreatic cancer this past Friday. With months to live, Pausch gave his famous "Last Lecture" speech at Carnegie Mellon University in September 2007 and it was featured as a Quote of the Week on September 24th (see below for a link to his last lecture).

"We are spiritual beings, and inherent in our DNA is a design to return us home -- home to our true essence, our greatest self, our limitless self. One of the ways we unconsciously ensure our return is through pain. Pain is the greatest motivator for change. It is the spiritual crowbar that pries open the door to new realities. Would we look into our deeper selves or dwell in them, grapple with them, or inquire into them and initiate change if everything was perfect? More than likely we would just continue living day by day in the comfort of our familiar worlds".

__________

"Pay attention to the truth. It's not an intellectual thing. It's a gut thing. My truth is that I love real, honest, passionate, intense experiences. Experiences that don't apologize for themselves or claim to be something they aren't. ... You want a recipe? Boil some spaghetti in well-salted water. While you're doing that, heat up some good extra-virgin olive oil in a skillet and throw in some thin slices of garlic and some red pepper flakes. When the pasta's cooked, toss it in the skillet. Throw in some chopped parsley and a little of the pasta water. Toss it around. Put it on a plate. Grate some Parmigiano Reggiano on top. Congratulations, dude. You've just made spaghetti all'aglio e olio. One of the greatest simple truths of humankind - and a damn good emergency dinner. That's a recipe. It's an idea. It's a dish. It's an icon. It's an experience. It's not rules. And as you cook up your life, I hope you never let anyone else's recipe for success intimidate you or get in your way. Rules are overrated. "

Words to Live By

Dream what you want to dream;
Go where you want to go;

Be what you want to be,
Because you have only one life

And one chance to do all the things
You want to do.

May you have enough happiness to make you sweet,
Enough trials to make you strong,
Enough sorrow to keep you human and
Enough hope to make you happy.

The happiest of people don't necessarily
Have the best of everything;
They just make the most of
Everything that comes along their way.

The brightest future will always
Be based on a forgotten past;
You can't go forward in life until
You let go of your past failures and heartaches.

When you were born, you were crying
And everyone around you was smiling
Live your life so at the end
You're the one who is smiling and everyone
Around you is crying.

"Get out of any situation that endorses negativity, causing you imbalance. People come together in relationships for growth, not for life. If a relationship sustains you, that is, if you're both growing from it, and if it's beautiful and it has energy, you're together for good. If not, either fix it or ditch it. You don't need situations that don't support you or that lower your energy. You don't owe anything to anyone.

The only real responsibility you have is to work on yourself to raise your energy. That will become your gift to the world. Pull back from negative situations and negative people. You don't need to judge them or try to change them. Just allow them to follow their path. You may want to give them a little shove, but if they won't move, you move. Never mind security; preserve your soul".

Welcome New and Old Souls to the Quote of the Week.

This week's quote are the lyrics from Yael Naim song, A New Soul. Perhaps you know the song or recognize the tune from the Apple AirBook commercial...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YUxbDEPFiM

Whether you are a new Soul, a young Soul or an old Soul, maybe the lesson is to communicate and learn how to give and take.
__________

I'm a new soul
I came to this strange world
Hoping I could learn a bit bout how to give and take
But since I came here, felt the joy and the fear
Finding myself making every possible mistake

See I'm a young soul in this very strange world
Hoping I could learn a bit bout what is true and fake
But why all this hate? try to communicate
Finding trust and love is not always easy to make

This is a happy end
Cause you don't understand
Everything you have done
Why's everything so wrong

This is a happy end
Come and give me your hand
I'll take you far away

I'm a new soul
I came to this strange world
Hoping I could learn a bit bout how to give and take
But since I came here, felt the joy and the fear
Finding myself making every possible mistake

New soul... (la, la, la, la,...)
In this very strange world...
Every possible mistake
Possible mistake
Every possible mistake
Mistakes, mistakes, mistakes...

From the Quote of the Week Files, May 12, 2008

Are you looking...

to become more aware of your spiritual self?
feel more alive?
to be more connected to others and to nature?
to feel less isolated?
to be more comfortable with change?
to enhance your physical and mental health?
age more gracefully?

Then the suggestions from this week's quote is for you!!! Enjoy!
__________

"Pay attention to your breath. Many cultures identify breath with spirit, seeing the breath cycle as the movement of spirit in the physical body.. Simply minding the breath is a way of expanding consciousness beyond the ego, of experiencing ranscendence.

* Connect with nature. You can do this by walking or sitting in a natural setting; a city park will do just fine. Allow yourself to slow down, drop your usual routines, and just absorb the influence of the place.

* Make a list of people in your life in whose company you feel more alive, happy, and optimistic. Make an effort to spend more time with them. Our spiritual selves resonate with others, and that connection is a healing.

* Bring flowers into your home and enjoy their beauty.

* Listen to music that you find inspirational and uplifting.

* Admire a work of art that raises your spirits: a painting, sculpture, or work of architecture.

* Reach out and try to resume connection with someone from whom you are estranged; practice forgiveness.

* Do some sort of service work. Give some of your time and energy to help others. The possibilities are endless but do not include just writing a check to charity.

"The suggestions above are intended to help you become more aware of your spiritual self. Any activity that makes you feel more alive, more connected to others and to nature, less isolated, more comfortable with change, is beneficial. It will enhance your physical and mental health. It will help you accept the fact of your aging. It will help you to age gracefully".

Welome to the Quote of the Week. Reinhold Niebuhr the 20th century theologian is the author of this weeks' quotes. Enjoy!
__________

Nothing worth doing is completed in our lifetime,
Therefore, we are saved by hope.
Nothing true or beautiful or good makes complete sense in any immediate context of history;
Therefore, we are saved by faith.
Nothing we do, however virtuous, can be accomplished alone.
Therefore, we are saved by love.
No virtuous act is quite a virtuous from the standpoint of our friend or foe as from our own;
Therefore, we are saved by the final form of love which is forgiveness.

Reinhold Niebuhr

The Full Original Serenity Prayer

God, give us grace to accept with serenity
the things that cannot be changed,
Courage to change the things
which should be changed,
and the Wisdom to distinguish
the one from the other.

Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time,
Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace,
Taking, as Jesus did,
This sinful world as it is,
Not as I would have it,
Trusting that You will make all things right,
If I surrender to Your will,
So that I may be reasonably happy in this life,
And supremely happy with You forever in the next.

Amen.

__________

Grow up! Who cares what others think about you?

You have been given your own work to do. Get to it right now, do your best at it, and don't be concerned with who is watching you.

Nothing can truly be taken from us. There is nothing to lose. Inner peace begins when we stop saying of things, "I have lost it" and instead say, "It has been returned from where it came from."

Except for extreme physical abuse, other people cannot hurt you unless you allow them to.
The universe we inhabit is the best possible universe.

Fix your resolve on expecting justice and order, and they will increasingly reveal themselves in a divine intelligence whose intentions direct the universe.

Welcome to the Quote of the Week. Your presence, exactly as is at this very moment, is greatly appreciated. Come on in and tune in to this weeks quote on success. . .
__________

Which Way is Success?

"Which way is success?" the man asks. The stoic sage points down the path to his left. The man, thrilled at the prospect of easy success, rushes off in the appropriate direction. From the distance comes a loud SPLAT! The man reappears. He is bruised and tattered.
Again he asks the guru, "Which way is success?" Once again the wise man says nothing. He simply points down the path to his left. The man quickly races down the path a second time. From the distance comes a much louder SPLAT! The man returns crawling on his hands and knees. He is bloody and beaten.
He yells at the guru, "Twice I have asked you about the path to success. Both times I followed your directions and both times all I have gotten is splatted!" He screams at the top of his lungs, "No more pointing, talk to me!" The wise man calmly replies, "Success is that way. It is just a little past SPLAT."

Have you forgotton your own best advice? NO PROBLEM!! Rediscover it right here with The Quote of the Week! Going Deep, Meditation and Catching Fish are the themes of this weeks' quote. Enjoy!
__________

"Ideas are like fish.

If you want to catch little fish, you can stay in the shallow water. But if you want to catch the big fish, you've got to go deeper.

Down deep, the fish are more powerful and more pure. They're huge and abstract. And they're very beautiful.

I look for a certain kind of fish that is important to me, one that can translate to cinema. But there are all kinds of fish swimming down there. There are fish for business, fish for sports. There are fish for everything.

Everything, anything that is a thing, comes up from the deepest level. Modern physics calls that level the Unified Field. The more your consciousness-your awareness-is expanded, the deeper you go toward this source, and the bigger the fish you can catch."

A Thought

Where do we get the fuel to thrive and flourish?

We have -- within us -- the fuel to thrive and to flourish...

Where is this fuel within us?
We tap into it whenever we feel energized and excited by new ideas.
We tap into it whenever we feel at one with our surroundings.
We tap into it whenever we feel playful, creative, or silly.
We tap into it whenever we feel our soul stirred by the sheer beauty of existence.
We tap into it whenever we feel connected to others and loved.
In short, we tap into it whenever positive emotions resonate within us.
When positive emotions are in ample supply – we take off.
We become generative, creative, resilient,
ripe with possibility and beautifully unpredictable.
