From the Quote of the Week Files; December 31, 2012

Happy New Year everybody!!  Welcome to the last Quote of the Week for 2012!!! This week's quote is a number!
__________

"525,600"

Jonathan Larson; Seasons of Love; RENT
__________

Why a number or why that number?  That number is from the song Seasons of Love and was featured in the musical Rent. Since we are passing through the end of 2012 and tomorrow we begin 2013, it seems appropriate to reflect upon how we measure a year.

The song is a great reminder of how a year contains 525,600 minutes, and that at the end of a year all we have are our  memories with family, friends and loved ones.  And each of those minutes is an opportunity. An opportunity to move towards something; achieve a goal; to love; to help or just to be there.

So as we approach year's end, I am thinking about where I made the most of those 525,600 minutes and when I squandered them away (unfortunately, way too many minutes). I am also thinking about the New Year ahead and planning on moving forward and taking advantage of most, if not all, of the 525,600 minutes!  In fact, 525,600 may be my word for 2013!

So Happy New Year Quote of the Week Members!!!  Let us ALL seize each minute!!!
__________

The start of the song...

Five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes.
Five hundred twenty-five thousand moments so dear.
Five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes,
How do we measure……measure a year?
In daylights—in sunsets, in midnights—in cups of coffee,
In inches—in miles, in laughter—in strife.
In five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes.
How do we measure a year in the life?

Seasons of Love; Jonathan Larson

From the Quote of the Week Files; Christmas Eve

"This Holiday Season...

Mend a quarrel. Seek out a forgotten friend. Dismiss suspicion, and replace it with trust.
Write a love letter. Share some treasure. Give a soft answer. Offer encouragement.
Manifest your loyalty in word and deed. Keep a promise. Find the time. Forgive an enemy.
Listen. Apologize if you are wrong. Try to understand. Flout envy. Examine your demands
on others. Think first of someone else. Appreciate. Be kind; be gentle. Laugh a little.
Laugh a little more. Deserve confidence. Take up arms against malice. Decry complacency.
Express your gratitude. Welcome a stranger. Gladden the heart of a child.
Take pleasure in the beauty and wonder of the earth. Speak your love. Speak it again.
Speak it still once again."

And remember...

"He who has no Christmas in his heart will never find Christmas under a tree."

A Very Recent Quote of the Week Classic (May 10, 2012)

"You just gotta ignite the light and let it shine
Just own the night like the 4th of July'
Cause baby you're a firework

Come on, show 'em what you're worth
Make 'em go, oh
As you shoot across the sky

Baby, you're a firework
Come on, let your colors burst
Make 'em go, oh
You're gonna leave 'em falling down

Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon
It's always been inside of you, you, you
And now it's time to let it through"

All the above quotes are by Zig Ziglar, a motivation speaker and leader who recently died at the age of 86.
I was an avid listener and reader to his teachings and they never failed to challenge my perspective as well as put a smile on my face!  In fact, I still use some of his adages in my own facilitation/consulting practice.
__________

Here are a few more of his insightful quotes…

“Remember that failure is an event, not a person.”

“You will get all you want in life, if you help enough other people get what they want.”

“People often say motivation doesn’t last. Neither does bathing—that’s why we recommend it daily.”

“There has never been a statue erected to honor a critic.”

“If you go looking for a friend, you’re going to find they’re scarce. If you go out to be a friend, you’ll find them everywhere.”

“A goal properly set is halfway reached.”

I’m devoting this column to his memory by sharing a few of his insightful quotes:

Pour yourself a cup of ambition as you sit back and read the Quote of the Week!
___________

“I have come to accept the feeling of not knowing where I am going. And I have trained myself to love it. Because it is only when we are suspended in mid-air with no landing in sight, that we force our wings to unravel and alas begin our flight. And as we fly, we still may not know where we are going to. But the miracle is in the unfolding of the wings. You may not know where you're going, but you know that so long as you spread your wings, the winds will carry you.”

Are you concerned about how to have a great Holiday season?   Perhaps these two Recycled Quote of the Week Classics by Debbie Ford may help

"As the holidays approach, it's so essential to prepare yourself - body, mind and soul - for the faster pace of the coming weeks. This is the time to take extra special care.  While you're giving to others, make this the time to give to yourself as well.

"If you were going to make this the best holiday season ever, how would you do it?  It won't happen for most people, because most people won't have that as their #1 intention.  And it's unlikely that you'll have the life-changing holidays that you could have if you don't create a powerful intent."

This is your life. Do what you want and do it often.
If you don't like something, change it.
If you don't like your job, quit.
If you don't have enough time, stop watching TV.
If you are looking for the love of your life, stop; they will be waiting for you when you start doing things you love.
Stop over-analysing, life is simple.
All emotions are beautiful.
When you eat, appreciate every last bite.
Life is simple.
Open your heart, mind and arms to new things and people, we are united in our differences.
Ask the next person you see what their passion is and share your inspiring dream with them.
Travel often; getting lost will help you find yourself.
Some opportunities only come once, seize them.
Life is about the people you meet and the things you create with them, so go out and start creating.
Life is short, live your dream and wear your passion.”

Welcome to the Quote of the Week!!  Your presence, exactly as is at this very moment, is greatly appreciated.

I've been seeing the above quote (a manifesto really) around the internet lately and it seems to have become the new "Just Do It" approach. It was created by brothers Dave and Mike Radparvar and their friend Fabian Pfortmuller as they put on paper their ideals as they started their new business, Holstee.  Even though the business deals with consumer goods, the  the manifesto poster is now one of Holstee’s best-selling items and has been translated into 12 languages.  Hmm... It makes me think... What is my manifesto?  What is yours?

"When you start lookin' around for something good to take the place of the bad, as a general rule you can find it."  From the movie, Old Yeller.

The above line is the ending sentence from last weeks quote and as the hardships of Hurricane Sandy (homes destroyed, devastated communities, no power or water, fuel shortages and limited transportation) are still felt, I have been lucky to have witnessed "the good that started to take place of the bad' through the kindness and generosity of volunteers and individual citizens that just want to help. So the Quote of the Week is dedicated to those KIND STRANGERS with BIG HEARTS!

Welcome to the Quote of the Week. As most of you know, the northeast was pounded last week by Hurricane Sandy.

Fortunately, I was very lucky as I was not impacted that much but I am still at a loss of words as I try to process the enormous amount of destruction that this hurricane wrought to the homes of family and friends and to the surrounding towns near where I live. And as I watch the news, It is impossible to imagine the devastation brought to so many lives throughout the northeast.

A continuing lesson for me is the acceptance of that I can only control so much in life ~ my actions and reactions. Everything else, such as nature, is up to the powers that Be.
_________

"That was rough.... Thing to do now is try and forget it.... I guess I don't quite mean that.  It's not a thing you can forget.  Maybe not even a thing you want to forget.... Life's like that sometimes... Now and then for no good reason a man can figure out, life will just haul off and knock him flat, slam him agin' the ground so hard it seems like all his insides is busted.  But it's not all like that.  A lot of it's mighty fine, and you can't afford to waste the good part frettin' about the bad.  That makes it all bad.... Sure, I know - sayin' it's one thing and feelin' it's another.  But I'll tell you a trick that's sometimes a big help.  When you start lookin' around for something good to take the place of the bad, as a general rule you can find it."

"What My Son's Disabilities Taught Me About 'Having It All" is the article that inspired this week's quote.  Because of her child's problems, the author will never have a tidy, peaceful life. But none of this keeps her from being happy -- as long as she asks herself the right questions. (From the Business of Life Blog)
__________

When I look at friends and acquaintances, many with perfectly beautiful children and wonderful lives, and see how desperately unhappy or stressed they are about balancing work and family, I think to myself that the solution to many problems is deceptively obvious. We are chasing the wrong things, asking ourselves the wrong questions. It is not, "Can we have it all?" -- with "all" being some kind of undefined marker that shall forever be moved upwards out of reach just a little bit with each new blessing. We should ask instead, "Do we have enough?"

Remembering Steven Covey

The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Steven Covey has been one of my favorite management/personal development books and I refer to it often. Unfortunately, Mr. Covey passed away July 16th and here are a few of his timeless insights.  May he rest in Peace.
__________

"Sow a thought, reap an action; sow an action, reap a habit; sow a habit, reap a character; sow a character, reap a destiny."

"Until a person can say deeply and honestly, ‘I am what I am today because of the choices I made yesterday,’ that person cannot say, ‘I choose otherwise.’"

"To learn and not to do is really not to learn. To know and not to do is really not to know."

"Our behavior is a function of our decisions, not our conditions.

And, of course, the meat of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People:

Habit 1: Be Proactive
Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind
Habit 3: Put First Things First
Habit 4: Think Win/Win
Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
Habit 6: Synergize
Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw

Two quotes by the 4th Century B.C, Chinese thinker and social philosopher Confucius  are this week's quotes.  I have to remind myself of the 1st one when I go jogging or enter a 5K race. It is also a pretty good life lesson as well.  Enjoy!

Welcome to the Quote of the week! For what it's worth is the theme for this week's quote and song.  Enjoy (for what it's worth)!
__________

"For what it's worth: it's never too late or, in my case, too early to be whoever you want to be. There's no time limit, stop whenever you want. You can change or stay the same, there are no rules to this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it. And I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you feel things you never felt before. I hope you meet people with a different point of view. I hope you live a life you're proud of. If you find that you're not, I hope you have the strength to start all over again."

From the movie, Benjamin Button (a letter to his daughter)

My Autobiography in Five Short Chapters

Chapter One....

"I walk down the street.  There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.  I fall in.  I am lost.  I am helpless. It isn't my fault!  It takes me forever to find a way out."

Chapter Two....

"I walk down the same street.  There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.  I pretend I don't see it. I fall in again. I can't believe I'm in the same place, but it isn't my fault!!  It still takes me a long time to get out."

Chapter Three....

"I walk down the same street.  There is a deep hole in the middle of the sidewalk.  I see it there. I still fall in....it is a habit. I know where I am.  It is my fault.  I get out immediately."

Chapter Four....

"I walk down the same street.  There is a deep hole in the middle of the sidewalk. I walk around it."

Chapter Five....

"I walk down another street!"

“Be Kind for Everyone You Meet is Fighting a Great Battle.”

Plato
__________

The above Quote of the Week has been bouncing around in my head for the past couple of week since reading it Tom Peter's book, The Little BIG Things: 163 Ways to Pursue Excellence.  I was reminded of the quote the other day as I met 4 people going through tremendous personal battles and they were all dealing with their challenges with grace and dignity.

By the way, it not certain that Plato was the author of this quote.  Some people think it might have been John Watson.  Either way, it is a great quote!

"It's a beautiful day!"

Father Joe Nolan
__________

A simple quote with great meaning!

We celebrated my Uncle Joe's 90th Birthday and 65th anniversary of his ordination to the Priesthood on Sunday.  It was quite a party as we celebrated at Belmont Park Race Track and had a race named in his named in his honor (The Joralemon Street Gallup ~ he was born on Joralemon Street in Brooklyn). The quote is the way he began all his homilies.

Live Everything

"I want to beg you, as much as I can, to be patient toward all that is unresolved in your heart and to try to love the questions themselves like locked rooms and like books that are written in a very foreign tongue.

Do not seek the answers, which cannot be given to you because you would not be able to live them.

And the point is to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer."

It is graduation month in the US and it marks a big step in a student's life. This week's quote is an excerpt from a Commencement Speech given by Dr. Randy Pausch, a professor at Carnegie Mellon University. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and was told in Aug 2007 that he only had 3-6 months to live. When he gave this speech at Carnegie Mellon, it was the 9th month (May 2008). He later passed away 2 months after that.

“We don’t beat the reaper by living longer. We beat the reaper by living well and living fully. For the reaper is always going to come for all of us. The question is: What do we do between the time we are born, and the time he shows up? Because when he shows up, it’s too late to do all the things that you’re always gona, kinda get around to.”

Do you ever feel like a plastic bag drifting through the wind, wanting to start again?  Or, do you ever feel, feel so paper thin like a house of cards, one blow from caving in? If so, then this week's quote is for you!!!!

It is part of the lyrics of one of my favorite jogging songs and it helps me from feeling like a waste of space and reminds me that I am an original, that cannot be replaced!!

"You just gotta ignite the light and let it shine
Just own the night like the 4th of July'
Cause baby you're a firework

Come on, show 'em what you're worth
Make 'em go, oh
As you shoot across the sky

Baby, you're a firework
Come on, let your colors burst
Make 'em go, oh
You're gonna leave 'em falling down

Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon
It's always been inside of you, you, you
And now it's time to let it through"

A Recycled Quote of the Week Classic...

Welcome to the Quote of the Week!  Your presence, exactly as is at this very moment, is greatly appreciated. Come on in and enjoy this week's quotes!
__________

Walk with the dreamers, the believers, the courageous, the cheerful,
the planners, the doers, the successful people with their heads in the clouds
and their feet on the ground.  Walk with those who have ideals,
with zest to help and lift, to create and contribute.
Let their spirit ignite a fire within you to leave this world better
than when you found it. . . . Associate with the creative people
wherever you find them.  Make friends with them, go where they are,
talk with them, listen to them, be open and receptive to them,
let them inspire you.  Catch their attitudes, their way of thinking and living.

Wilferd A. Peterson
__________

A Recycled Quote of the Week Classic...

I will not die an unlived life.
I will not live in fear of falling or catching fire.
I choose to inhabit my days,
To allow my living to open me,
To make me less afraid,
More accessible.

To loosen my heart until it becomes a wing,
a torch, a promise.
I choose to risk my significance;
To live so that which came to me as seed
goes on to the next as blossom
And that which came to me as blossom,
goes on as fruit.

__________

“Whatever you hold in your mind will tend to occur in your life. If you continue to believe as you have always believed, you will continue to act as you have always acted. If you continue to act as you have always acted, you will continue to get what you have always gotten. If you want different results in your life or your work, all you have to do is change your mind.”

Hello everybody and Welcome to the Quote of the Week!!! What is your definition of happiness? Famed movie director, Alfred Hitchcock knew and that is this week's quote! Enjoy!__________

"A clear horizon — nothing to worry about on your plate, only things that are creative and not destructive… I can’t bear quarreling, I can’t bear feelings between people — I think hatred is wasted energy, and it’s all non-productive. I’m very sensitive — a sharp word, said by a person, say, who has a temper, if they’re close for me, hurts me for days. I know we’re only human, we do go in for these various emotions, call them negative emotions, but when all these are removed and you can look forward and the road is clear ahead, and now you’re going to create something — I think that’s as happy as I’ll ever want to be.”
