“When I was young and free and my imagination had no limits, I dreamed of changing the world. As I grew older and wiser, I discovered the world would not change, so I shortened my sights somewhat and decided to change only my country.
“When I was young and free and my imagination had no limits, I dreamed of changing the world. As I grew older and wiser, I discovered the world would not change, so I shortened my sights somewhat and decided to change only my country.
But, it too seemed immovable.
As I grew into my twilight years, in one last desperate attempt, I settled for changing only family, those closest to me, but alas, they would have none of it.
And now as I lie on my deathbed, I suddenly realize, if I had only changed myself first, then by example I would have changed my family. From their inspiration and encouragement, I would have then been able to better my country, and who knows, I may even have changed the world.”
Inscribed on the tomb of an Anglican Bishop (1100 A.D) in Westminster Abbey

A Nudge from the late Leo Buscaglia
"The majority of us lead quiet, unheralded lives as we pass
through this world. There will most likely be no ticker-tape parades for us, no
monuments created in our honor.
But that does not lessen our possible impact, for there are scores
of people waiting for someone just like us to come along; people who will
appreciate our compassion, our unique talents. Someone who will live a happier
life merely because we took the time to share what we had to give.
Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind
word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all
of which have a potential to turn a life around. It's overwhelming to consider the
continuous opportunities there are to make our love felt."
Leo Buscaglia

A Nudge from Mr. Rogers
"At the
center of the Universe is a loving heart that continues to beat and that wants
the best for every person. Anything that
we can do to help foster the intellect and spirit and emotional growth of our
fellow human beings, that is our job.
Those of us who have this particular vision must continue against all
odds. Life is for service."
Fred Rogers (a.k.a., "Mister
Rogers")

The Journey
One day you
finally knew
what you had
to do, and began,
though the
voices around you
kept
shouting
their bad
advice --
though the
whole house
began to
tremble
and you felt
the old tug
at your
ankles.
"Mend
my life!"
each voice
cried.
But you
didn't stop.
You knew
what you had to do,
though the
wind pried
with its
stiff fingers
at the very
foundations,
though their
melancholy
was
terrible.
It was
already late
enough, and
a wild night,
and the road
full of fallen
branches and
stones.
But little
by little,
as you left
their voices behind,
the stars
began to burn
through the
sheets of clouds,
and there
was a new voice
which you
slowly
recognized
as your own,
that kept
you company
as you
strode deeper and deeper
into the
world,
determined
to do
the only
thing you could do --
determined
to save
the only
life you could save.

A Nudge from Leo Tolstoy
“Man need only divert his attention from searching for the
solution to external questions and pose the one, true inner question of how he
should lead his life, and all the external questions will be resolved in the
best possible way.”

An Anthony De Mello Quote that Nudges
"Where there is love there are no demands, no expectations, no dependency. I do not demand that you make me happy; my happiness does not lie in you. If you were to leave me, I will not feel sorry for myself; I enjoy your company immensely, But I do not cling."

A Poem that Nudges
If
If
you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too,
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too,
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:
If
you can dream--and not make dreams your master,
If you can think--and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:
If you can think--and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:
If
you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"
And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"
If
you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings--nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much,
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And--which is more--you'll be a Man, my son!
Or walk with kings--nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much,
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And--which is more--you'll be a Man, my son!
Rudyard Kipling

Through the Gateway
"Through the gateway of feeling your weakness lies your strength;
through the gateway of feeling your pain lies your pleasure and joy;
through the gateway of feeling your fear lies your security and safety;
through the gateway of feeling your loneliness lies your capacity to have fulfillment, love and companionship;
through the gateway of feeling your hate lies your capacity to love;
through the gateway of feeling your hopelessness lies true and justified hope;
through the gateway of accepting the lacks of your childhood lies your fulfillment now.
In giving ourselves permission to feel all of our feelings, we free ourselves from the tyranny of our defenses and open ourselves to our heart's desires."

__________
“When we least expect it, life sets us a challenge to test our courage and willingness to change; at such a moment, there is no point in pretending that nothing has happened or in saying that we are not yet ready. The challenge will not wait. Life does not look back. A week is more than enough time for us to decide whether or not to accept our destiny.”

If a dog were your teacher, you would learn stuff like...
When
loved ones come home, always run to greet them; Never pass up the opportunity
to go for a joyride; Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your
face to be pure ecstasy; When it's in your best interest practice obedience;
Let others know when they've invaded your territory; Take naps and stretch
before rising; Run, romp, and play
daily; Thrive on attention and let
people touch you; Avoid biting, when a
simple growl will do; On warm days, stop
to lie on your back on the grass; On hot
days, drink lots of water and lay under a shady tree; When you're happy, dance around and wag your
entire body; No matter how often you're
scolded, don't buy into the guilt thing and pout...run right back and make
friends; Delight in the simple joy of a
long walk Eat with gusto and enthusiasm; Stop when you have had enough; Be loyal;
Never pretend to be something you're not; If what you want lies buried, dig until you
find it When someone is having a bad
day, be silent, sit close by and nuzzle them gently.
