The Star Thrower

The Star Thrower

I awoke early, as I often did, just before sunrise to walk by the ocean's edge and greet the new day.  As I moved through the misty dawn, I focused on a faint, far away motion.  I saw a youth, bending and reaching and flailing arms, dancing on the beach, no doubt in celebration of the perfect day soon to begin.

As I approached, I sadly realized that the youth was not dancing to the bay, but rather bending to sift through the debris left by the night's tide, stopping now and then to pick up a starfish and then standing, to heave it back into the sea.  I asked the youth the purpose of the effort.  "The tide has washed the starfish onto the beach and they cannot return to the sea by themselves," the youth replied.  "When the sun rises, they will die, unless I throw them back to the sea."

As the youth explained, I surveyed the vast expanse of beach, stretching in both directions beyond my sight. Starfish littered the shore in numbers beyond calculation.  The hopelessness of the youth's plan became clear to me and I countered, "But there are more starfish on this beach than you can ever save before the sun is up.  Surely you cannot expect to make a difference."  The youth paused briefly to consider my words, bent to pick up a starfish and threw it as far as possible.  Turning to me he simply said, "I made a difference to that one."

I left the boy and went home, deep in thought of what the boy had said. I returned to the beach and spent the rest of the day helping the boy throw starfish in to the sea.

A little perspective...

A little perspective...

If we could shrink the earth's population to a village of precisely 100 people, with all the existing human ratios remaining the same, it would look something like the following.

There would be:

57 Asians; 21 Europeans; 14 from the Western Hemisphere, both north and south; 8 Africans; 52 would be female; 48 would be male; 70 would be nonwhite; 30 would be white; 70 would be non-Christian; 30 would be Christian; 89 would be heterosexual; 11 would be homosexual; 6 people would possess 59% of the entire world's; wealth and all 6 would be from the United States.  80 would live in substandard housing; 70 would be unable to read; 50 would suffer from malnutrition; 1 would be near death; 1 would be near birth; 1 would have a college education; and 1 would own a computer

When one considers our world from such a compressed perspective, the need for both acceptance, understanding and education becomes glaringly apparent.

The following is also something to ponder...

If you woke up this morning with more health than illness - you are more blessed than the million who will not survive this week.

If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation -- you are ahead of 500 million people in the world.

If you can attend a church meeting without fear of harassment, arrest, torture, or death - you are more blessed than three billion people in the world.

If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep - you are richer than 75% of this world.

If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish someplace...you are among the top 8% of the world's wealthy.

Regrets, I've had a few
But then again, too few to mention

Hello Everybody and Welcome to the Quote of the Week!! This week's quotes are about regrets which I hope you have too few to mention!
________

"Don't ever regret anything cause regretting means wanting to forget every moment. Every moment is what makes you who you are today, every moment spent in regret is a moment wasted. Don't waste your moments in life, you never know when you'll stop waking up."

Maryam Zarei
__________

A Recycled Quote of the Week Classic...

"Regrets over yesterday and the fear of tomorrow are twin thieves that rob us of the moment." Sooner or later we must realize there is no station, no one place to arrive at once and for all. The true joy of life is the trip. "

The Station
Tucked away in our subconscious minds is an idyllic vision.  We see ourselves on a long, long trip that almost spans the continent.  We're traveling by passenger train, and out the windows we drink in the passing scene of cars on nearby highways, of children waving at a crossing, of cattle grazing on a distant hillside, of smoke pouring from a power plant, of row upon row of corn and wheat, of flatlands and valleys, of mountains and rolling hills, of biting winter and blazing summer and cavorting spring and docile fall.
But uppermost in our minds is the final destination.  On a certain day at a certain hour we will pull into the station.  There sill be bands playing, and flags waving.  And once we get there so many wonderful dreams will come true.  So many wishes will be fulfilled and so many pieces of our lives finally will be neatly fitted together like a completed jigsaw puzzle.  How restlessly we pace the aisles, damning the minutes for loitering ... waiting, waiting, waiting, for the station.
However, sooner or later we must realize there is no one station, no one place to arrive at once and for all.  The true joy of life is the trip.  The station is only a dream.  It constantly outdistances us.
"When we reach the station, that will be it !" we cry. Translated it means, "When I'm 18, that will be it!  When I buy a new 450 SL Mercedes Benz, that will be it!  When I put the last kid through college, that will be it!  When I have paid off the mortgage, that will be it!  When I win a promotion, that will be it!  When I reach the age of retirement, that will be it!  I shall live happily ever after!"
Unfortunately, once we get it, then it disappears.  The station somehow hides itself at the end of an endless track.
Relish the moment.  It isn't the burdens of today that drive men mad. Rather, it is regret over yesterday or fear of tomorrow.  Regret and fear are twin thieves who would rob us of today.
So, stop pacing the aisles and counting the miles.  Instead, climb more mountains, eat more ice cream, go barefoot oftener, swim more rivers, watch more sunsets, laugh more and cry less.  Life must be lived as we go along.  The station will come soon enough.

A Quote that Nudges

Courage does not always roar.
Sometimes, it is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying,
"I will try again tomorrow".

A Quote from my Favorite Movie when I was a Kid!

"That was rough.... Thing to do now is try and forget it.... I guess I don't quite mean that.  It's not a thing you can forget.  Maybe not even a thing you want to forget.... Life's like that sometimes... Now and then for no good reason a man can figure out, life will just haul off and knock him flat, slam him agin' the ground so hard it seems like all his insides is busted.  But it's not all like that.  A lot of it's mighty fine, and you can't afford to waste the good part frettin' about the bad.  That makes it all bad.... Sure, I know - sayin' it's one thing and feelin' it's another.  But I'll tell you a trick that's sometimes a big help.  When you start lookin' around for something good to take the place of the bad, as a general rule you can find it."

A Quote that Nudges

In obedience to the laws of nature
the river flows to the sea

In obedience to the laws of nature,
thoughts flow through our minds
in the same way
as the river flows to the sea

If we direct our thinking,
if we harness our thoughts,
they may be caused to flow through
the channels of our minds
that develop our powers
and lift us to the realm of the stars

YESTERDAY, TODAY AND TOMORROW

YESTERDAY, TODAY AND TOMORROW

There are two days in every week about which we should not worry, two days that should be kept from fear and apprehension.

One of them is yesterday with its mistakes and cares, its faults and blunders, its aches and pains.
Yesterday has passed forever beyond our control.

All the money in the world cannot bring back yesterday.  We cannot undo a single act we performed; we cannot erase a single word. Yesterday is gone.

The other day we should not worry about is tomorrow, with its possible adversities, its burdens, its large promise and poor performance.  Tomorrow is also beyond our control.

Tomorrow’s sun will rise, either in splendor or behind a mask of clouds – but it will rise.  Until it does, we have no stake in tomorrow, for it is as yet unborn.

This leaves only today.  Any man can fight the battles of just one-day.  It is only when you and I add the burdens of those two awful eternities – yesterday and tomorrow – that we break down.

It is not the experience of today that drives men mad.  It is the remorse and bitterness for something which happened yesterday, and the dread of what tomorrow will bring.

Let us, therefore, live but one day at a time.

Wishing you a most beautiful day, wherever this may find you!

The Bottom Line

FACE IT, Nobody owes you a living.

What you achieve, or fail to achieve in your lifetime is directly related to what you do or fail to do.  No one chooses his parents or childhood but you can choose your own direction. Everyone has problems and obstacles to overcome, but that, too, is relative to each individual.
NOTHING IS CARVED IN STONE.

You can change anything in your life if you want to badly enough.  There are no excuses!  Those who take responsibility for their actions are the real winners in life.  Winners meet life’s challenges head on, knowing there are no guarantees, and give it all they’ve got.  And never think it’s too late or too early to begin.  Time plays no favorites and will pass whether you act or not.  TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE.

Dare to dream and take risks.  Compete. If you aren’t willing to work for your goals don’t expect others to.  BELIEVE IN YOURSELF

The Girl Scout Law

I will do my best to be
honest and fair,
friendly and helpful,
considerate and caring,
courageous and strong, and
responsible for what I say and do,
and to respect myself and others,
respect authority,
use resources wisely,
make the world a better place,
and be a sister to every Girl Scout.

Welcome to the Quote of the Week!  Your weekly spiritual snack for mind, body & soul. This week's quote is about making mistakes or making more of them!
__________

"There are certain things in life where you know it's a mistake but you don't really know it's a mistake because the only way to really know it's a mistake is to make the mistake and look back and say 'yep, that was a mistake.' So really, the bigger mistake would be to not make the mistake, because then you'd go your whole life not knowing if something is a mistake or not."

Some thoughts on Attitude!

“The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of my attitude on my life.  Attitude, to me, is more important than facts.  It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstance, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do.  It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill.  It will make or break a company, a church, a home.  The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day.  We cannot change our past – we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way.  We cannot change the inevitable.  The only thing we can do is play on the string we have, and that is our attitude.  I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90 % how I react to it.  And so it is with you – we are in charge of our attitudes.”

A Story that Nudges

Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody

There is a story about four men named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.  There was an important job to be done, and Everybody was asked to do it.  Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.  Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.  Somebody got angry about that, because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, and Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it.  It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody, when actually Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

An Emerson Quote that Inspires

"To laugh often and much;
to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children;
to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;
to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others;
to leave the world a little better; whether by a healthy child, a garden patch
or a redeemed social condition;
to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.
This is the meaning of success."

Ralph Waldo Emerson

A Story of Perserverance

Two frogs fell into a deep cream bowl.
One was an optimistic soul.
But the other took the gloomy view.
"We'll drown," he lamented without much ado,
and with a last despairing cry,
he flung up his legs and said "Goodbye."
Quote the other frog with a steadfast grin,

"I can't get out but I won't give in,
I'll just swim around till my strength is spent,
then I'll die the more content."
Bravely he swam to work his scheme,
and his struggles began to churn the cream.
The more he swam, his legs a flutter,
the more the cream turned into butter.

On top of the butter at last he stopped,
and out of the bowl he gaily hopped.
What is the moral? It's easily found...
If you can't hop out, keep swimming around!
